THE PRINCIPLE OF BEING
Pure consciousness, the silent space in which everything appears, that which remains when everything changes. The foundation of all experience.
The Essence of BEING
“You are not what you think you are. You are not what you feel you are. You are that which observes both thoughts and feelings.”
The principle of BEING represents the fundamental consciousness that underlies all experience. It is the “I” that remains identical through all the changes of life: the same space from which one looked with the child's eyes is the one from which one now looks with the adult's eyes.
Key Question
Who hears my thoughts? Who observes my emotions? Observing is an operation of the Mind; BEING is the space from which that operation occurs: the consciousness that contains the ego but is not the ego.
The Four Levels of BEING
Existence
The most basic level: knowing that you exist. “I am.” Most people live here without questioning it - an assumed but unexamined existence.
Identity
Beginning to ask “Who am I?” Distinguishing between the constructed self (ego) and something deeper that observes it.
Consciousness
Actively recognizing consciousness as the foundation. The observer becomes conscious of itself as an observer.
Pure Being
Full realization: there is no separation between the observer and the observed. BEING recognizes itself as the very field of experience.
Relationship with NON-BEING
BEING...
- Makes room for observation without judgment
- Remains stable
- Contains the ego
- Is pure consciousness
- Has no fixed form
NON-BEING (Ego)...
- Judges and reacts
- Changes constantly
- Is contained by consciousness
- Is a construct
- Identifies with forms
The goal is not to destroy the ego, but to recognize that it is a tool, not our fundamental identity. BEING uses NON-BEING to function in the world.
Cosmic Correspondence
By structural analogy—a correspondence of function, not of substance—BEING is read alongside the Primordial Space (Ep) of the MCMC: the capacity to host, the field on which manifestation unfolds. Just as Ep hosts what mass discharges into it, BEING hosts the existence of the ego.
Practices for Cultivating BEING
Silent Observation
5-10 minutes daily
- Sit in silence
- Observe your thoughts pass by
- Do not follow them or reject them
- Remain as the observer
Ask “Who am I?”
Self-Inquiry
- When you identify with something, ask
- Do not look for a conceptual answer
- Remain in the space of the question
- That space IS consciousness
Background Consciousness
During the day
- In any activity, notice that someone is observing
- That observer does not change even when the activity changes
- Cultivate the consciousness of the observer
- Do it effortlessly, like a gentle reminder
